Chiang Mai

We had booked train tickes to Chiang Mai but ended up canceling them the day after we got them. We discovered that night that the overnight 12 hour train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai had derailed 5 times in the last 7 weeks. We found plane tickets in a hurry since we didn't like our odds on a minibus for 12 hours either.

Shared bath
1st night

Our first night we decided to rough it for 150 baht ($5) But we only lasted one night. The pictures above look better than it really was. Below we upgraded the next day to a 300 baht room that was luxurious called SK House.

Our room was the door on the top left
It even had a pool

Live fish swimming, you could pick them out to be cooked (see them in the background)

We went to the temple on the mountain know as Wat Phra Doi Suthep. It was built in 1383 and is where some of the bones from the first Budda are kept. They are enshrined in temple.

Spectacular view of the city from the top

Who can pass up roasted corn on the cob

The Old City is surrounded by a moat

We stumbled across this guy crossbow fishing in the moat. It was amazing to watch and I wanted to offer him money to give it a try but couldn't find the appropriate words to communicate without sounding rude.

I went back the next day to watch again. I found another guy "fishing" this time from up in a tree. The video is really cool, check it out below.

Leaving our first Thai Massage. One hour = $7

The Sunday Walking Street Market. The major street transformed into a really neat local crafts and food market. We wished we could ship everything home.
