Our introduction to Laos has been a bit drawn out as we have been traveling for four days to get to our destination here in the town of Luang Prabang. We took a bus back to Chiang Mai (762 more curves) and spent the night. The next day was a bus north to Chiang Khong and a hired boat across the river to customs and immigration in Laos. The next day was a river boat, the six hour "slow boat" to Pakbeng. Finally the last day had us continuing on the river boat for seven hours to Luang Prabang, a world UNESCO heritage town. The dinner we had that night for $1.25 each was well earned and very delicious.

This bus actually was safer because it couldn't go very fast up the hills

A fun note about Laos is that it is required for all tourists to be in a hotel room at midnight. Other regulations for us are quite amusing too. This official notice is posted in every hotel room.

We got to the boat an hour early so we wouldn't be on the floor seats the second day

Not the most beautiful arrival.
